Automotive Diagnostics & Immobilizer Service in Vancouver, WA

Some no-start problems are not the key itself but the security system that checks it. We diagnose key recognition and immobilizer issues at your vehicle in Vancouver.

When the car won’t recognize the key

Modern vehicles use an immobilizer: the car checks the key’s chip or smart signal before it lets the engine start. When something in that chain fails, the result can look like a dead battery, a bad starter, or a faulty key. Guessing gets expensive.

We start by reading what the vehicle reports, then check the key, the reader, and the related modules to find where the problem actually is.

Signs you may have an immobilizer or key issue

  • Engine cranks but will not start, or starts and dies

  • Security or key light stays on or flashes on the dash

  • “Key not detected” or similar message on push-to-start cars

  • A new or replacement key opens the doors but will not start the car

  • Starting problems appeared after battery, module, or ignition work

What the service covers

  • Reading and interpreting relevant fault codes

  • Checking whether the vehicle recognizes each key

  • Key programming when a key is the cause

  • Ignition and anti-theft system checks, including older VATS-equipped GM vehicles

  • A clear explanation of what we found and the options available

Some faults point to parts or repairs outside locksmith work. When that happens, we tell you what we found so you can take it to the right place.

Professional Automotive Key Programming

Many key and immobilizer jobs are now software work as much as locksmith work. We use professional diagnostic equipment and OEM (manufacturer) diagnostic software with the required subscriptions for supported makes. That is what makes dealer-level car key programming and professional immobilizer programming possible at your vehicle, instead of a visit to a dealership service department.

Some manufacturers protect key and immobilizer procedures behind security access. Pacific Locksmith is a NASTF-registered Vehicle Security Professional, and we use those credentials to request security information for qualifying procedures — only after ownership has been verified.

Pacific Locksmith is an independent locksmith — not a dealer for, affiliated with, or endorsed by any vehicle manufacturer. Coverage depends on the make, model, year and key system, and not every vehicle can be done on site. If a procedure is dealer-only, we tell you before scheduling. For keys and remotes themselves, see Key Fob & Smart Key Programming.

How a diagnostic visit works

A no-start, a security light or a “key not detected” message can come from the key, the battery or power supply, wiring and connectors, or a module in the car. The cause is determined after testing, not guessed in advance.

  1. Symptoms and history. What happened, which warning lights or messages you see, and recent events such as a battery replacement, jump start, accident or water exposure.

  2. Ownership check. Registration or title, plus ID.

  3. Basics first. Vehicle battery and voltage, key battery, fuses and visible damage.

  4. Scan and read data. Trouble codes in the relevant modules and live data such as key recognition and immobilizer status.

  5. Narrow it down. We test the key, the antenna or reader, wiring, power and ground as needed, following the manufacturer’s diagnostic steps where they are available.

  6. Explain before repairing. We tell you what we found, what the fix involves (a key, programming, a wiring repair or module work) and what it costs before we do it. If the repair needs a dealer-only procedure or shop equipment, we say so.

  7. Repair and verify. After the repair we scan again and test starting and key functions.

Equipment and care

We use professional scan tools and, where the vehicle requires it, factory diagnostic software. Before any programming we stabilize battery voltage, and afterward we re-check the systems involved. A diagnosis identifies the cause; it does not promise that every fault can be repaired on-site.

Ownership verification

Security system work involves the same checks as key programming. Before we make or program any key, we verify ownership. Please have the vehicle registration, title, or insurance card ready, or have the registered owner present.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a check-engine scan?

No. We focus on problems related to keys, ignition, and the anti-theft system rather than general engine repair.

Can you come to a car that won’t start?

Yes. That is what mobile service is for. Tell us where the vehicle is and what it is doing.

What should I tell you when I call?

The year, make, and model, what happens when you try to start it, any warning lights or messages, and any recent work on the vehicle.

Can you program car keys using OEM diagnostic software?

Yes, for supported vehicles. We use manufacturer diagnostic software with the required subscriptions together with professional programming equipment. What can be done depends on the make, model and year, and protected procedures need ownership verification and security access first.
