Fobs, remotes, and smart keys

“Key fob” covers several different things: a separate remote that only locks and unlocks, a remote built into the key head, or a proximity smart key that lets you start the car with a button. Each is programmed differently, and the method depends on the vehicle.

We come to the vehicle, program the fob to the car, and check that every function works before we leave.

Common reasons to call

  • You lost a fob and need a replacement

  • You want an additional smart key for a second driver

  • A replacement fob you bought will not pair with the car

  • The car shows a “key not detected” message

  • The remote stopped working after a battery change

Sometimes a weak battery is the whole problem. We will tell you if a simple fix is likely before you book a visit.

Buying your own fob? Check this first

Online listings often show a fob that looks right but has a different frequency, chip, or part number. Before you buy, send us:

  • Year, make, and model of the vehicle

  • A clear photo of the original fob, front and back

  • The FCC ID and part number, if printed on it

We will tell you whether the part is likely to work before you spend money on it. Some fobs are locked to a vehicle once programmed and cannot be reused.

How key fob and smart key programming works

A fob that stopped working isn’t always a fob that needs replacing, so we start by checking it.

  1. Identify the fob and the problem. Flip key, remote-head key, separate remote or proximity smart key, and what happened: a new fob, one that stopped working, or one that was lost.

  2. Ownership check. Registration or title, plus ID.

  3. Test before replacing. We check the fob’s battery and signal first. Sometimes a new battery or case is all it needs.

  4. Match the part and frequency. A fob has to match the vehicle’s frequency and system. One that looks the same may not be compatible.

  5. Cut the emergency blade, if the fob has one.

  6. Program the needed functions. On many cars the remote buttons and the engine-start chip are programmed separately; smart keys usually need both.

  7. Test every button. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start if equipped, keyless entry and push-button start.

  8. Hand-off. We explain what was programmed and how to replace the fob battery.

Equipment and care

Smart key programming often communicates with several modules, so we check battery condition and keep the voltage stable when the procedure needs it. We confirm the fob is compatible before programming and test each supported function afterward.

Ownership verification

Before we make or program any key, we verify ownership. Please have the vehicle registration, title, or insurance card ready, or have the registered owner present.

Frequently asked questions

Can you program a fob I already have?

Often, if it is compatible with your vehicle and has not been locked to another car. A photo and the FCC ID help us check.

Do I need my existing key present?

If you have a working key or fob, bring it. On some vehicles it is needed to add a new one.

My push-to-start fob works sometimes. Is it the fob or the car?

It can be either. A battery, a damaged fob, or a vehicle-side issue can cause it. Our immobilizer and key diagnostics service can help narrow it down.
